It was easy to like the smooth animation and mildly sci-fi premise of "Hal". In a near future/alternate now, androids capable of mimicking human behavior are used therapeutically to help with grief - for example, by copying the appearance of a loved one who's recently died, to give friends and family closure. A young couple quarrels before one leaves on a trip; when the plane explodes, the survivor left behind needs the companionship of an android to process the grief of loss and the guilt of letting an argument be the last time they spoke.
