i avoided this studio ghibli outing for years because i'd only heard bad things about the son who failed to fill his father's shoes in the director's chair. the critics weren't wrong. though visually decently compelling, the plot lacks coherence and it feels hastily cobbled together from its novel source material to fit the two-hour runtime. bar the unsettling villain (made all the more creepy by willam dafoe's softly menacing whispering on the english dub) no characters succeeded in leaving a lasting impression and with such a muddled narrative it wasn't really a surprise. read more

Tales from Earthsea suffers the fate of being terribly mediocre in a sea of fantastic films from Studio Ghibli. There is nothing that makes me actively dislike the movie; the characters, story, visuals, etc. are all just fine. But there is also nothing about these facets of the film that stand out to make them memorable or impactful. read more
