this is not a movie. this is a state of mind. one that permeates everything and everywhere, a reflection on life, death, friendship, values and significance, all together in the form of a surreal journey through strange worlds and personalities. deliberately quiet and slow, but never losing track of what it wants to tell and how. an experience to live through that is both enthralling and disturbing, and certainly unique. i wonder if the lack of visual expression of the characters was intentional or just the product of budget limtations, but surprisingly this was not an issue to me, in fact... read more

gotta rearrange my "top 5 best sound design" list after watching this. every decision haruomi hosono makes is gorgeous and terrifying. one of the best depictions of dreams i've ever seen, purely for how well it balances moments of beauty with the feeling something terrible could happen at any moment. when it does, it happens suddenly, without fanfare, and then the movie is over in a confusing flash of unresolved tension. i yearn for the days of ambiguous endings. the overt christianity did not hit for me at all and is the main reason i dropped a star. there's nothing harmful or didactic in... read more
