A surprisingly awful show with a cast of ridiculously unlikable characters. I am frankly stunned that this is considered a Battle-Shonen masterpiece and one of the best anime of its era. The Elric brothers are remarkably off-putting egoists outdone only by the terrible military drones that work alongside them and their awful childhood friend Winry, who is frankly unbearable and makes every episode she's in worse. I'm not sure where the other reviewer is coming from, but I'll try to keep to what I thought and felt when watching the first FMA anime. As you may know, it came out while the manga was running, so some of the plot was changed and other elements never appeared - with the consent and assistance of Arakawa, who encouraged a different version of her manga. It's best to put the reputation of both anime aside and approach FMA 2003 as its own story.
