yoshitaka amanos illustrations for vampire hunter d initially ensorcelled me, but this anime makes no bones about its intent and it most certainly does not line up with the delicate beauty presented to me in amanos works. vampire hunter d was difficult to sit through, in part because of its dated appearance and my snooty aesthetic. it looks like the era from which its born, but worse yet it lacks the heart of its peers, instead going with a straight and narrow approach that procures yawns within its first half hour. our primary female is a lame damsel-in-distress. she is literally the object... read more

scavenger hunt 75 23. watch a gothic movie. well and truly capturing that gothic / steampunk aesthetic i absolutely love. a castle flies in this one; if that's not enough to warrant watching this, then i don't know what is. read more

while the original movie felt like a vhs-destined video nasty from a bygone era, this pseudo-sequel feels like a full-blown theatrical epic with no expense spared. it's gorgeous- start to finish, with lavishly detailed environments, rich moody atmospheres, and an impeccably realized setting that is simultaneously old-world gothic, and hi-tech bleak. the first movie toyed with the same elements, but never brought them together in quite the way this does. this reminds me so much of pat mills and olivier ledroit's french comic, requiem vampire knight. the ornate machinery, the aggressive read more
