Beautiful animation, slightly problematic plot

Before any plot spoilers, I want to emphasize that "The Garden of Words"/"Kotonoha no Niwa" is visually stunning. Plants being struck by raindrops have never looked better. It makes you want to spend your afternoons in a classic Japanese garden. For animation alone, it's worth a try.

***SPOILERS BELOW***

As for the plot, I had trouble with parts of the central premise. Yes, in the end a lonely teenage boy and a depressed young woman meet, make each others' lives a little better, then part with no guarantee they will meet again, and with no romantic consummation. I was happy read more

with visuals as stunningly realistic as makoto's, it's easy to forget you're watching an anime, and simply get lost in the mood of the garden. shinkai paints a poignant picture of uncertainty and isolation slightly tucked away from a busy city school. a tale of dreams and fears shared and broken, ultimately heading to new beginnings after the brilliantly rendered storms and droplets.. read more
