Beautiful animation, slightly problematic plot

Before any plot spoilers, I want to emphasize that "The Garden of Words"/"Kotonoha no Niwa" is visually stunning. Plants being struck by raindrops have never looked better. It makes you want to spend your afternoons in a classic Japanese garden. For animation alone, it's worth a try.

***SPOILERS BELOW***

As for the plot, I had trouble with parts of the central premise. Yes, in the end a lonely teenage boy and a depressed young woman meet, make each others' lives a little better, then part with no guarantee they will meet again, and with no romantic consummation. I was happy read more

with visuals as stunningly realistic as makoto's, it's easy to forget you're watching an anime, and simply get lost in the mood of the garden. shinkai paints a poignant picture of uncertainty and isolation slightly tucked away from a busy city school. a tale of dreams and fears shared and broken, ultimately heading to new beginnings after the brilliantly rendered storms and droplets.. read more

feels like an unfinished thought, the film emphasizes their relationship so much but both characters don't feel well-defined. it's brevity isn't the problem as much as the design of having a slow paced, voiceover ridden affair when the images are beautiful and strong enough to portray the story. read more

the garden of words is a movie that seemed to be very much my jam™, as the kids say- and i wanted to love it a lot more than i did. director makoto shinkai and the team of animators capture authentic atmosphere and texture phenomenally well. not to mention, my own nostalgic penchant for rainy days runs deep. it goes without saying that i felt a bit of kindred bias towards the tone and topic of the movie. however, the movie grasps at your name sized emotional revelations, but carries less character development than the pilot of any given tv show or anime. with of a runtime of only 45 minutes,... read more

but in reality... i wish the rainy season never stopped such a beautiful film, the imagery of the rain and the park is just so well done, accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack that really fleshes out the backgrounds and the emotion in the scenes. the story is really cute in my opinion, i know many people have a problem with the creep factor of it all, but i really did not think about it while watching the film, and to me that means it's probably not a big issue. it's just a cute relationship to me and also pretty innocent, both of them are mentally about the same age anyhow. so read more
