version: 1998 disney english dub (35mm) miyazaki apparently intended kiki as a 60-minute special before taking over as director and expanding it to feature length, and the film probably would have been better off without the extra 42 minutes. there's a lot of plot, but little narrative arc. the film's climactic dirigible accident does help to redeem things a bit, but kiki doesn't seem to end the film too transformed. that said, miyazaki's weakest features shares merits with his best--the vistas, the skies, and the water are beautiful, and kiki's flights provide opportunities to show off the... read more

This is Miyazaki’s true magnum opus. I’m not even being sarcastic, this is hands down the best film he has ever directed.
