there are some interesting ideas and cool visuals, but it is a pretty messy film. there is way too much plot stuffed in here, so none of the plot threads are fully or satisfactorily explored. it was also really difficult to follow since there is so much to introduce in a really short period of time. part of that was because i was having trouble telling the characters apart (why are there three different big, burly guys with buzz cuts and mustaches?) and also because i was watching a very mediocre dub that didnt differentiate between characters very well. pretty much every character besides... read more

formative when i first caught the second half of this late one night as a pre-teen. the idea of a cool ass animated feature for adults blew my little mind and it's still the kind of thing that's often imitated but never duplicated. last time i watched this was probably 15 years ago on a manga uk dvd, though i did read the entirety of the manga at least less than a decade ago. it's a remix by necessity, but it wholly feels like an uncompromized one because otomo is a stubborn asshole and it single-handedly elevated this thing called anime. read more

highly influential, visually stunning and absolutely remarkable. for a start, in a similar way to which inception would hardly have been made if not for satoshi kons paprika, other major works such as stranger things, looper and chronicle probably would never have come to be if it wasnt for akira. the brilliant move of using cyberpunk and supernatural abilities to encapsulate post-war japan and its anxieties is one of the many reasons this is such a fucking amazing movie. happy that i finally got around to this! feel free to send me recs on movies that use fatalism read more

Akira is fun, intriguing, violent and original. Beyond that this anime is famously the first, and a very early example, of an animation with completely matching and synchronous mouth movements for all the characters, which is an achievement for the fictitious and full-length feature. read more
