a simple plot rendered with charm -- it really made me want to revisit yokohama, and imagine what it must have felt like 50 years ago. goro was able to convey the clubhouse's decrepit dusty state, and i almost choked when the dust started to stir. i also enjoyed the bicycle ride down the hill. the family dramas were a bit too convoluted though -- luckily i had wifey around to explain it to me... :) read more

a simple and good-natured tale that feels like living someone else's nostalgia. which is probably the best compliment i could give a period piece like this. as usual with any ghibli production, the animation itself is the absolute star as the mind-blowing attention to detail fleshes out a world and a time that feels authentic and lived in. there's real memories lingering on the screen here. was i at all concerned with the pacing? the plot structure? no. i simple allowed myself to view the movie in 'realtime' as it were. i was not actively making mental notes about things. simply enjoying the... read more

“i walked alone still hoping to find you, the flower that blooms inside of my heart” from up on poppy hill starts off so strong and then moves into an absurd plot. has the usual food, scenery and kindness of a ghibli movie. made me feel so warm inside and then kind of disgruntled. still, its so full of love that i cant hold on to any contempt for it i may have. what was the need for the incest though??? read more

There is a lot I love about Poppy Hill; the setting of Yokohama, the music, the blossoming love story, but most of all the restoration and fight for the Latin Quarter clubhouse. I feel like Yokohama isn't represented as much in Japanese cinema/anime compared to Tokyo or Kyoto in particular and I love the setting of fishing towns. The music perfectly fits the vibe of Poppy Hill, and probably my favorite bit outside of the theme song is when Shun and Umi are racing to see the captain at the end.
