being a fan of all other hosoda movies i was very disappointed when this movie sucked ass. i thought this was his first "independant" movie, and figured he learnt as he progressed as a filmmaker, but i was suprised to see that this movie was made after "the girl who leapt through time" the main character is a fucking doof, extremely generic and boring character who's development isn't that great either. it's cluttered with side characters, of which only a few is interesting, and it has multiple sort of unrelated plot points which makes the movie feel unfocused. the cool parts, the one in the online network are few and far inbetween, and instead it spends half of the movie focusing on weak family stuff with a lot of characters you don't really care about. it doesn't even go out of its way to make the online parts that cool or out there, its just basically the digimon movie 2.0 without going into spoilers the plot is bad, nonsensical and relies on people, and entire organizations being stupid. characters do stupid things throughout the movie, and the plot is resolved in a really dumb and uninteresting way. also it has a love story, because why not. the only redeeming factor this movie has is that hosoda has a really cool artstyle, and it shines in this movie as well. a lot of the online scenes looks imaginative and great. too bad the story is garbage. this just feels like a tropey, bad anime movie, which is a big shame considering the quality of his other works.
