film #17 of hooptober part vii: the new bloodimpetigore is my first experience with indonesian director joko anwar, but it won't be my last this month (satan's slaves is on my hooptober list as well). i don't know if this is necessarily the way to start in on anwar's filmography, but it certainly worked for me. impetigore is a slow-burning but effective tale that takes a ton of genre tropes and gives them a slightly different look, to great effect.
starting off with a hell of a sequence, anwar does a nice job of building connection to his two protagonists maya (tara basro) and dini (marissa anita), who are struggling to make ends meet when a sudden and brutal attack on maya leads her to return to the remote village her aunt and her left when she was extremely young. she learns that her family has a history here, and that's where the suspense starts to really kick in. basro and anita have a great rapport between them and give natural but charismatic performances, making it easy to care for them and thus feel threatened when they get to this creepy-ass village where a lot of funerals seem to take place and the locals are suspicious of outsiders. this is one of those movies that will be too slow for some, but anwar does such a good job constructing the mystery that it's tough not to get sucked in and follow where things are going.
and to be fair, it's not all just gradual building. when it's time for some of the nastier stuff, anwar doesn't shy away from being uncomfortable. but it's also not over the top, either. things do lose a little bit of steam in the final act for a bit as maya gets closer to the truth and it becomes more obvious how far the town's conspiracy goes, but it's brought back together with an effective climax. if you're interested in delving into horror from other cultures, impetigore is a good way to go.
