"i feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. but i cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the republic they died to save" ~ bixby letter
abraham lincoln tendered these words to a mother and father that had lost 5 sons in the civil war while fighting for the cause of the north. this sentiment and theme is explored through the experience of one woman during a time of war in mikhail kalatozov's the cranes are flying. a deep and moving meditation on loss, love, and the cost of upholding one's way of life. but, this film isn't about the fighting we usually come to think of in relation to war. this film is about the fight to push through those left at home have to wage, even through the devastating events that come their way.
this fight and the emotional journey can be found on the face of the heroine, veronica, played wonderfully by tatiana samoilova. we see the pain, the struggle, and the hope all painted across her face as she goes through the emotional turmoil and journey that the war brings her. these facial expressions, captured in a way very similar to how they are captured in the passion of joan of arc, become part of the intricate mural that kalatozov is painting in each frame.
of course, kalatozov is the real star of the film. the energy of the camera as it moves and the effect each tracking shot, dutch angle and camera tilt are simply jaw dropping. this is my first kalatozov film and there is something so natural and visceral about what the camera captures and how it moves throughout the landscape. each shot is perfectly framed with something interesting going on at all times. the flames feel so real, the destruction so devastating, the feelings the films capture are so true. seeing how masterfully this film is directed is cause enough to seek out this film. cinephiles of all types will greatly appreciate and enjoy the craft that kalatozov brings to this film.
all this, along with some beautiful photography, really brings this somewhat uncomplicated and less interesting story to a new level. rarely do you run across a film so expertly made and directed. really a film that everyone should seek out, even if the story holds nothing for you.
