why do all these found footage movies based on vhs misrepresent it as this completely horrible and unreliable format that's constantly shifting, never tracking properly, full of weird artifacts, and never properly color graded? newsflash, kids.... vhs wasn't actually that bad!!! i taped and dubbed a lot of things. i only ever saw such horrible quality as what's in this movie when i tried reusing old security tapes from a bank that had been recorded over and over and over again at horrible speeds. if a serial killer is so invested in leaving footage behind, then he's not gonna use the worst... read

part of obligatory october of horror lots of potential but most of it remains untapped while some of it is actively undermined by weird choices like having someone complain about not getting news coverage due to 9/11. read

My quick rating - 5;5/10. I believe this would've been a bit more relevant about 10 or so years ago when the market wasn't as saturated with first person POV movies after the Blair Witch craze. But as this movie alone; it does a pretty compelling job of fabricating the existence of a serial killer through media clips and various found tapes of footage of his murders. The videos themselves are really not all that shocking as far as morbid gore (if you want that; check out Mordum) but are more suggestive in the twisted mind of the killer. Defintely better than most of these types of movies out... read

As a fan of found-footage movies, this was right up my alley. It's definitely messed up, but it's so well done that it could be mistaken for a real documentary. read

Another found footage film. Nothing really new, tries to be disturbing but mostly fails. Worth a watch nonetheless if you like this genre of horror. read

I had a hard time telling whether or not this is a real documentary or a well crafted and researched horror movie. The way the actors act feels real but the killings and torture are also shown which doesn't seem like a very tasteful thing to do outside of a fictional story and since I haven't seen a serial killer documentary before I can't tell if this is typical. Either way I enjoyed it. There was never a dull moment. The acting is high quality and the sets were constantly changing. The way the killer abducted people felt very simple and believable. Like a stereotypical danger that you were... read

The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a faux-documentary concerning the actions of a serial killer in the town of Poughkeepsie, New York. It consists of interview footage of law enforcement officials and others people who were connected to the case in which a masked killer (who became known as the Water Street Butcher) brutally murdered scores of people yet was somehow able to avoid detection. Also front and centre, is the footage which was taken from the thousands of videotapes that the killer produced as he documented his every move as he stalked and hunted down his prey. Directed by John Erick Dowdle,... read

I didn't rewatch this movie before writing this review, I just pondered for a while and revisited some of the scenes (it's 12 hours after I wrote the first review).
It's a very mixed movie for me, I can't just write it off as unrealistic like some other users have because what's weird about this film is that for every ridiculous scene there are three other scenes that are chillingly realistic.
Yes, the scene where he breaks into Cheryl's house is fucking preposterous, they're laying on the couch and he's just standing there filming them and they don't see him. But you can't claim the read
