Review of Dogtooth

first time watching lanthimos' film made me understood what people meant by his special brand of humor, absurdist humor that remains confined to reality and logic, sounds oxymoron, i know. it started off with a brilliant moment of a tape recording that purposefully taught wrong meanings to certain words. things sounded amiss at first and the oddity began ramping up until the inevitable end but it never loss its frighteningly or absurdly funny moment that lanthimos had instilled in this movie. throughout the course of the movie, one thing had been made abundantly clear, which is the state of the 3 adults (the son and daughters). they were still children, dependent of their parents and their world consisted only their house and the yard with the swimming pool. to go outside you have to use a car, albeit only an inch from the main gate. their only connection to the outside world is a security guard, christina from the father's workplace that plays an important key role in influencing these adult children because she wants to get her keyboard licked, or perhaps there's more than that, the irresistible chance to exploit the naive. they are human beings with deformed linguistic skills and raised with complete ignorance to outside world. the humor are not entirely stemmed for sadistic absurd moments but moments such as the meaning of the word 'cunt' being explained by the mother and the lyrical explanation of frank sinatra's "come fly with me". it was all an awkward playful fun. it is also interesting to note that no explanation is given for why the parents has decided to made up lies and walled their children into this seemingly safe little haven. very competently shot and sanitizingly weird even for moments like incest, dogtooth is a wonderful film that is out there to challenge its viewer. a transgressive piece that ask questions rather than being pure shock value from its exploitative moments. looking forward for other lanthimos stuff.
