there isn't anything original in this premise except for the combination: "built on a collective tomb", "a church hiding secret misdeeds", "secretive priests", "the new librarian", "this discovery could change everything", "forces of evil unintentionally released by exploration", possession, "trapped with the evil forces", "if released, will take over the world". less haunted house than carpenter's prince of darkness in a majestically gothic church, with the inventiveness and gore of giallo kills. if only it were more of a giallo though, because it is pretty boring aside from a few moments -... read

now this is more like it. thick, sirupy atmosphere keeping you on the verge of a dreamlike slumber; drip-feeding you chilling moments. only when watching italian horror could dozing off here and there ever be beneficial to the experience. take the first act of demons, and the concept of the beyond (sort of, who really knows?), then stretch that out over an entire screenplay and you've got the church. read

this might be my favorite italian horror flick. psycho-sexual, satanic imagery splashes across the screen like blood-red paint on canvas. the fact this all unfolds in an old catholic cathedral is all the better. the eerie atmosphere of the film is amazing. it goes for broke with the wild visuals and gore and largely succeeds. thomas arana (the bodyguard) is magnificently creepy here. the guy needed more lead roles. even this movie gets sort of stolen away from him after a certain point. i'm in love with everything about it though, and having hugh quarshie take point as leading man was a great... read
