seeing this while the national played live in concert would probably be a really cool experience. watching it on youtube? meh. i was very pleasantly surprised by director mike mills' film "beginners", which had a lot of great emotional moments delivered in primarily musical montage. there's a lot of that here, and alicia vikander is great, but the story just didn't have a ton of emotional impact for me. it's essentially a walk through the major elements of a girl's life, set to five songs by indie-rock darlings, the national. the songs are quite good, but didn't particularly sync up with the film musically or lyrically as far as i could tell. the life events have their moments, but i've seen as much in plenty of other art installations or short films. if this is one of the first kind of things like this that you see, you may be really moved by it, but for me it didn't really stand out enough to make it a must-see.
