ant timpson's directorial debut is an interesting but very uneven film that never quite lives up to its promise.
wood seems to delight in taking roles in small quirky films that are absolutely unflattering to him, especially if they give him weird facial hair, a bad haircut, or a combination of both. he is, of course, excellent, but his characters are so insistently niche that it's hard to concentrate on his acting. the beginning of this film has an awesome location, and is essentially a weird sort of two-step between wood and the criminally-underrated stephen mchattie. the tension is palpable as wood's "norval" attempts to connect to a father he's never known and has nothing in common with. the environment constantly hints towards a growing hostility, and you wonder at what could possibly be unveiled in the second act...
i should tell you that i'll get into spoilers below, but honestly you might actually want to know them because the second half of the film really devolves...
once we realize the truth of norval's father, the "daddy issues" come to the front in a pretty obvious way. it strains belief that anyone, especially norval, could be so desperate to connect with their dad that they would go on an increasingly inept crime spree. the film afterwards is filled with a fair bit of coincidences, conveniences, tropes, and a good dose of coens-inspired "wow, i didn't see that random event coming that would completely change the narrative". honestly, it broke my suspension of disbelief and the tone was all over the place. it didn't help that a lot of the acting was pretty hammy. i know that's probably not due to the actors, as they're all fairly experienced. it seemed to me that it was more of the director taking the 'most interesting' takes for each of them and cutting them together without regard for matching tonality.
in the end, a pretty unfulfilling film that didn't have any depth after the first half. some may get entertainment value out of it, but it wasn't for me. i look forward to seeing ant timpson fine-tune his craft, though.
