"oh look, it's another zombie fil--"
and then you see the premise and you're intrigued. or at least i was. we've certainly seen films where there's a group of people who are somehow immune to the zombie virus before, but jeff barnaby's blood quantum (a title referring the the purity of a person's indigenous lineage) casts it in a very interesting light by turning making indigenous people immune. set on a mi'kmaq reservation in quebec, the film features a hell of a plot structure as we spend the first act seeing the zombie apocalypse begin. and then just like that, it shifts gears to six months later when the miꞌkmaq are the ones who have the safe haven, and the white townies are seeking refuge.
that's a smart move by barnaby, who sets up a certain expectation and then pulls the rug out from under us so he can present something new. blood quantum is good at keeping viewers out of their comfort zone -- and that's important, because it makes the film's social commentary about the treatment of indigenous people and the earth itself easier to take in and (forgive the zombie pun) digest. it's all very present on the page, but the fact that the indigenous people of the americas have very had anything remotely approaching great representation on the whole in popular media makes it necessary to spell some things that a lot of people wouldn't otherwise understand out.
the script all in all is very good here; it leans into the tropes of the zombie genre while adding plenty new in the way of motivations, setting, and theme. and barnaby is a hell of a horror director, getting down and dirty with some fantastic practical gore effects. the cast occasionally stumbles in parts here and there; some moments come off wooden and a few other come off too scenery-chewing (mostly kiowa gordon as the 'bad boy' brother of the two siblings who make up the crux of the story). but all in all, blood quantum is a hell of a good time as a zombie film and one that remembers the subgenre was built off having big things to say.
