a film that does not get talked about as much as it probably should. it tells the story of a gay man and a fascist housewife that forge a connection over the course of the day in which hitler first visits mussolini. while almost everyone else is at the rally, the two characters, who are oppressed in unique ways, develop a special relationship slowly. over the course of the day, each one slowly begins to change through the relationship, especially as they learn more about one another.
mastroianni and loren give powerhouse performances. mastroianni, in particular, shows his versatility as an actor. this film is thought provoking, sad, and moving. the viewer clearly sees the oppression that each of the characters is going through. however, loren's character does not initially realize it while mastroianni's has been living through active oppression for years. as the relationship develops, the camera gets more intimate. the actors get closer together. yet, constantly, in the background, we hear the blaring audio version of the rally. we get the feeling of fascism and politics getting in the way and intruding on these beautiful and intimate moments between these characters. ettore scola, the director, never lets that leave our mind. in the end, that connection between two people is interfered with and eventually destroyed by the state of italy.
despite the extremely sad nature of the film, it is quite a wonderful experience to go through. the nuance in the character development and the relationship, along with some very very effective camera work make this film a must see.
