2023's Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a very surprisingly great DC flick with so many fun and vibrant different characters with very good CGI and worldbuilding making for a great theater experience. This is in my opinion even better than the first Shazam and aside from Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad is the best thing to come out of the DCEU so I suggest you definitely go out and see this one in theaters especially if you liked the first one. There's definitely some of the charm and vibe of the first one, but most of it feels lost in trying to make it big-scale and "grandiose" rather than small, sweet and personal. Some of the dialogue was kinda cheesy, the CGI (mostly green screen stuff) and Gadot looked weird (especially for the first half of her scene). Levi was a little better than I hoped, though that's not much, Asher Angel was much better. You could tell this wasn't gonna do well BO wise before it came out (bad marketing, Levi's controversy, the reboot news) so even with my lukewarm opinions on this movie, I do feel bad... read more

This movie made me think more about another passion of mine: anime. There are tons of shounen anime arcs that aren't filler arcs, they're just not the best arcs. Usually the characters still feel right, jokes are still there and most hit, just the actual dilemma/antagonists aren't all that great. That's basically this movie. I think this movie is getting a lot of heat for the wrong reasons, Shazam is the Ant-Man of the DCEU and the stakes are always gonna be lower. SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS isn't a bad movie, but it's not a particularly great one either. Unlike the first movie which managed to seem unique by taking the template for Tom Hanks' BIG and wrapping it around a superhero origin movie, the sequel feels like a spluttering car on the verge of running out of fuel. It all feels so empty and weightless. My quick rating - 6;2/10. I enjoyed the first one so even if I am more of a Marvel guy; time to check this one out. The flick is an entertaining and action-packed sequel that builds upon the success of the first film. The movie takes us on a wild ride as we follow Billy Batson's adventures as Shazam; and his struggles to balance his superhero life with his normal teenage existence. Nothing spectacular and they really shafted the kid actor for Billy, he hardly gets any screentime, but it's better than pretty much every single recent marvel film, which isn't a huge bar to cross but it's saying something. I liked this, It's insulting it got so much less than goddamn Morbius. Shazam deserved better, both in care from the studio and from box office sales, he's one of my favorites. read more
