Review of Cimarron
by Fletcher
Posted on June 21st, 2021
Neutral 5
Overall Rating
it is really dull for 90% of its runtime. there are a couple decent moments like the opening land rush or a few of the speeches, but most of the film is a drag. the sound mixing is absolutely atrocious, dialogue is hard to hear over the background noise. richard dix gives a big, boisterous performance that is remarkably bland. he is definitely acting to the back row and it really doesn't work great here. irene dunne gives a much more restrained and effective performance that really carries the film as much as it can. much has been made about the racism in the film, but i thought that was the one part that i was surprised by. while many of the characters are racists, i don't feel as though the film is. it isn't nuanced, but it makes a point to be critical of the treatment of the native americans by the government and white settlers in oklahoma. the one black character is used as comedic relief and a bit of a mascot, but it isn't in a hateful way. viewed as a product of its era, cimarron is one of the more progressive films of the early 30s. it isn't really fair to judge something made almost 90 years ago by modern sensibilities, it reflects the climate and attitudes of the time as disgusting as they may be and we can't go along ignoring history. watched as part of scavenger hunt 43 task #14: choose a movie from the 1930's. my list | wayne little's master list
