i care a lot is certainly not going to be for everyone by a long shot, but holy moly was it pure catnip for me. i love a good twisty neo-noir, i enjoy stories with unscrupulous protagonists, and i adore rosamund pike, peter dinklage, dianne wiest, and eiza gonzalez. so what more could i ask for in a movie like this? the whole of the cast is great here, though pike is obviously the lightning rod without whom this movie's lightning may not have struck. pike brings her ability to make amoral, ruthlessly determined characters to full bear with this role. marla grayson is a monster, but she's a... read more

missed opportunity to use "we care a lot" by faith no more as the opening soundtrack to this film. was highly recommended this film by an ex, who i now think only loved it so much because rosamund pike is such a #bossbitch in it. i'm happy if some ladies get a sense of female empowerment out of this, but personally i'm pretty over the whole "hey,women can be strong and evil too!" film movement. there'd better be a whole lot else going on with a story if a movie is going to reel me in and entertain me. so what else is here? well, ostensibly writer/director j. blakeson wants to expose how read more

all in all, i enjoyed this as a fun watch. not flawless, but well-paced and engaging. the positive: 1. with protagonists that are conniving people who do terrible things, getting the audience on their side is a tough sell, but i feel they did it well here, using two particular tools. a) if the evil heroine is bad, the villain is worse. b) we get a relatable primal emotion we can latch on to. the belief system she follows is the opening line of the film. there are only two options, be a predator or be prey. she is not willing to be the prey. 2. the structure is symmetrical. not only the first... read more

The performances and idea are great but the script is just so bad. Characters making stupid decisions for the sake of the plot. Things happening at just the right time for the sake of the plot. Bad guys becoming incompetent for the sake of the plot. Nothing feels realistic or organic or motivated by real human thoughts. Could have been so much better with a few re-writes. read more

I gave it one star and not half because Dinklage was in it. Hopefully, he only did it for the paycheck. Otherwise, the movie achieves the seemingly impossible. It is built on mercilessly overused clichés and it is illogical and makes no sense whatsoever at the same time. A couple of pathetic scammers exploiting the indifferent elderly care system turn superheroes and take on the brutal "Russian mafia" (who else is out there?). A fun caper that I actually enjoyed more as it progressed. Rosamund Pike gets a role she absolutely knows how to play and simply thrives. Cold blooded and ruthless, but most importantly, driven by a need to win and averse to any form of backing down, which takes the plot to some strange, far out places.
