Review of The Little Things

Overall Rating
there is something that i find very satisfying about generic hollywood genre pictures. the little things does nothing particularly well, but it doesn't do anything poorly either. i will probably have forgotten almost all of the details in a month, but it was a fairly enjoyable watch with some big names and just general all around competence. these kind of films set a great baseline to work from when evaluating other films. i have a greater appreciation for great films when i watch something kind of bland and generic, but i also appreciate a film that knows what it is, sets reasonable expectations and hits them. the little things isn't trying to be anything more than it is and it absolutely meets its modest ambitions. you will probably have some relative or coworker who will see this and be really high on it, but 6 months later they will give you a blank look if you mention it to them until you tell them it was the denzel serial killer movie. at that point they will nod and say they think they remember that one, but they will probably be thinking of the bone collector. john lee hancock has really carved out a nice niche as a workman director of thoroughly competent, if unremarkable studio productions. the worst thing to ever happen to his public perception was the random and undeserved awards attention that the blind side received. it was a decent underdog sports movie that got undue hype and the resulting blowback.
