i always struggle to find the merit in rape/revenge movies. going in, you know you're going to see a woman get raped, and there's no way around that. it's horrible. but watching the rapists get murdered is so cathartic. i think i got it this time. the revenge half is a fantasy. one that so many people are willing to indulge because justice of any stripe often eludes rape victims in reality. most victims have to contend with an awful fucking legal system, one that victim-blames and gives pathetically light sentences to certain offenders. to say nothing of the social suicide one commits by even admitting that they were assaulted. wouldn't it just be so fucking cathartic to get revenge on your own? i love how this entire genre and its fans seem to intimately understand how vile rape is, and even seem to stand in support of vigilante justice when the law won't do... but in reality people quibble about it like it's "politics". rapists deserve a whole lot worse than probation or a light five year sentence- three with good behavior. seeing as how i get angry about that shit too, i think i get why this genre has prospered even beyond the grindhouse era of cinema. as movies always paint in the most vivid and extreme fashion, both the rape and the revenge are very over-the-top, and extremely graphic. there's no room for nuance in a film like this. it's here to be as grisly and as unforgiving as possible. you're gonna feel sick, and then you're gonna feel fucking angry. that's how you know the movie has done its job.
