Hidden Away

The life and times of Italian painter Antonio Ligabue, who was raised in a foster family, had a history of mental illness and died just a few years after his first solo exhibition. Besides a few short flashbacks, this biopic follows a mostly traditional temporal line following Ligabue from his infancy to his deathbed - but the way director Diritti approaches his protagonist sticks so close to his subjective, discontinuous present that viewers are lured into his jagged, nearly animalesque attitude towards time.
