The Gleaners and I

Leave it to Agnès Varda to pick up a simple theme and extrapolate it to a wide range of social issues, and use it to shed light on the phenomenon of 'waste'. It's very interesting to see this right after Cléo From 5 to 7. While these two films couldn't be more different (digital vs film; documentary vs fiction; ...), the playful and original way in which Varda presents her subjects shines through. This documentary is so low-budget, using only the simplest of tools, that you have to admire her sheer virtuosity. A real treasure of cinema. read more
