Hugo

based on a fictional novel, but felt like a fantasy scorsese auto-biopic. kingsley's excellent as usual, and many of the gear mechanisms are a joy to watch, as are the parisian flybys. but somehow, despite dreamy effects and good child acting (esp chloe moretz's), this movie ultimately lacks something that tornatore conjured so well in cinema paradiso: heart; without which this production chugs along beautifully intricate but lifeless, like its intriguing automaton. read more

unlike the film's fellow 2011 oscar leader the artist though, hugo feels like old hollywood without fully submerging us within the limits of that era (which is not a statement against the artist, but i digress). this is scorsese taking all of the tools available to him that modern technology has to offer and making a film that is very close to his heart and yet completely accessible to family members of all ages. this is not a "family film" in the big hollywood dumbed-down sense where jokes are telegraphed with winks to the audience and characters are left barely one-dimensional because read more

als avatar damals in kino kam, war ich über mehrere monate verhindert; daher ist der hier nun vorliegende der einzige film, bei dem ich damals im kino und seitdem niemals wieder durch 3d wirklich einen mehrwert in sachen kino/visualisierung und effekte (und nicht nur die vergeben versuchte hascherei nach selbigen...) erkennen konnte. wenn wir so durch die uhrwerke fliegen, das ist ja schon toll, aber die (nachgeszellten) filmdrehs und diese wahnsinnig tollen szenen-setups ind dem glashaus zu erleben und überhaupt so durch die hintertür die bio von georges méliès nacherzählt zu bekommen... read more
