Review of Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College

Overall Rating
film #9 of hooptober the 6th: the producers cut the ghoulies franchise will never be recognized among the upper tier of horror film series, nor should it be. the 1980s films about demonic entities coming out of the toilet is trashy low-budget nonsense, but it's fun trashy low-budget nonsense. and that's why ghoulies iii: ghoulies go to college is the most quintessential entry in the series. the john carl buechler-directed entry is basically a animal house and revenge of the nerds-style college sex comedy that happens to involve creatures summoned by a comic book. there's a good concept for a movie in there, but i'm positive this isn't that movie. there are a few things that work here. buechler knows what tone he wants the film to have, and the one or two moments where everything is clicking, that tone comes through. kevin mccarthy is in full scenery-chewing mode here, and he has some fun with his role as the professor who uses the ghoulies to sabotage a prank war between fraternities so that he can expel them. (yep, that's the plot.) some of the other performances work all right, notably eva larue as the fresh-faced romantic interest of the lead character. but generally, this is a subpar version of the sex comedies it tries to emulate.
