there is a pretty wide range of psycho woman movie characters, and glenn close's character is at the far edge of "unhinged". the movie doesn't play coy with it, revealing her craziness early on, with just the threat escalating from there. there was still a bit of nuance though, times when she said things that sounded truthful and even right (especially about her pregnancy) if only the circumstances were different. but they are not, and this is probably what i liked most about the movie: after he left her, it was all bound to go to hell, the inevitability of noir. by "circumstances" i don't mean any of the specifics of their situation - his being married, her choice to keep the baby - but that, no matter how reasonable she sounds, we already know how delusional she is and how impulsively she can act on her delusions. it's only a matter of witnessing it unfold. and the movie does not disappoint - from the mundane, but horrific, harassing and stalking to the batshit like the rabbit incident, it is captivating and realistic. of course, the ending is suitably over the top in thriller style.
the tone is excellent, the tension when the phone rings, the despair and helplessness as he fails to keep her away, the attempt to pass it off as a client's issue at his first police visit giving way to honesty and exasperation at the second, the lashing back like an animal driven into a corner, and her relentlessness. it all leads to the end, it justifies it, but then the movie leaves us with that shot of her face, her eyes. in a tragedy, nobody wins.
