film #11 of hooptober the 6th: the producers cut
the worst thing about she-wolf of london is how it's sold as a universal monsters film. let's get this out of the way quickly: this film has nothing to do with the old horror monsters like frankenstein, dracula, and yes, the wolf man. that's going to lead people into a state of disappointment to be sure, but if you can get past that there's a fair amount of good stuff here. george bricker's script lays out a smart mystery story disguised as supernatural horror until the very end, with the heroine being gaslighted by someone she trusts. the characters have motivations and subplots that all work their way into the main story with surprising effectiveness.
meanwhile, director jean yarbrough adds some classic horror elements of the time -- ridiculously tame by today's standards, but easy to appreciate if not be scared by. she gives the whole thing a slick turn of the century noir feel and gets solid performances out of a cast that includes june lockhart, don porter, sara haden, and jan wiley. this is not a film that's going to scare anyone at this point in time, but she-wolf of london is a pretty solid b-tier universal thriller of the 1940s.
