can this trilogy live up to the scale and promise of its title? it definitely has the potential to. having only seen the first installment, i can't really answer that question accurately yet. the first one is stellar in so many ways. the cinematography is stunning, the acting serves the story perfectly, and some of the dialogue here is some of the most thought provoking and theme probing stuff i've seen in a film. and this film has a lot working against it. it has to do the heavy lifting of creating a plausible world to explore these themes in and create genuinely compelling and interesting... read

Masaki Kobayashi's reflection on the Japanese experience in occupying Manchuria, fighting World War II, and dealing with defeat is a staggering piece of cinema. Clocking in at just under 10 hours, "The Human Condition" – what a title! – takes us on a journey with Kaji (Tatsuya Nakadai) through a POW film, a war film and a survival film, tied together by a loose love story, weaving all these strands together with great care over its epic but impeccably paced run-time.
