it had been nine years since john carpenter had made a film, nine long years. his last film, ghosts of mars ended up being his worst film and it would of been a sad way to go if he never made another film. i, along with countless others were clamouring for another one.
and then, out of nowhere news broke that he was directing a new horror film called the ward. the more i read about the film, the more i heard about it, the more my excitement grew. then it was released, or was it? not in a theatre near me, not in very many theatres, not in any?
after playing at a few festivals the ward failed to get distribution. now how in the hell couldn't a new john carpenter flick get any distribution? what could be wrong with it? it couldn't be that bad could it?
well all i know is it took me until september 2013 to finally watch it (i purchased it sometime in mid 2012) and i can't say that this is carpenter's best film but hey, it wasn't that bad.
it had a great atmosphere, a solid cast and a strong leading lady in amber heard. it had tension, and great cinematography and a jump scare or two. the ward was like carpenter of old, where dread and tension and drawn out scares are the game here and not gore or jumps.
before i mention the story i just want to mention what wasn't that great about the film. for most of the movie it was kind of (just kind of) generic. it also, after finishing it, might not all add up. it doesn't have a classic carpenter score (but not terrible music) and in general it works as a decent film but it wasn't outright amazing, brilliant or very very good. it was above passable and better than expected.
now the story. i am going to mention another movie in a sentance or two that would quilify as a spoiler so be warned. the story is clever and solid. it doesn't feel all that original but it stills keeps you guessing all the way to a twist ending. the ending is a shocker and i never saw it coming. in the end, the film becomes less of a horror film because of it. the ward is like the john cusack film identity but better and makes a lot more sense and feels more believable. (okay, spoilers over).
i liked this film, more than i thought i would. it's not the greatest movie i've ever seen but it's also far from the worst. it's not carpenter's best but it's also far from his worst and just having him direct another film for me to watch is okay in my books, no matter how it turns out.
