an early short film from that kubrick guy, available to watch here:
most of this plays like one of those "get to know the fighter" segments that used to play before ufc match-ups, only instead of showing the guy's fighting style, here they show him waking up, eating breakfast, playing with his dog, etc.
it's hard not to focus entirely on the fact that he's an identical twin, and that this was in a day and age when a grow man could sleep in the same bed with his twin and everyone was just like "yeah, this is normal." also normal: he goes to get weighed in and this wasn't a big dramatic photo-op at this point, nor was he stressed about it. he looks basically like a normal guy, not ripped as hell and trying to lose water-weight. ah, the simple days of boxing.
the final few minutes are the fight itself, which is decisive. kubrick's photography of the fight is surprisingly good, and i think i see some influence here on the rocky movies later. a lot of the same angles and framing. the music is a little melodramatic (in this, not conti's score!) but there is a fairly satisfying end for such a humble beginning to one of the great directors.
