Review of Troll Hunter

Overall Rating
norwegian found footage. on paper, an interesting mix of found footage horror, documentary, folklore, and government bureaucracy/conspiracy. somehow the less of its parts. the long stretches of the latter 2 drain the tension while staying dry enough to not add much in themselves; the attempt at a scientific explanation from a veterinarian, for example, is just thrown in. the horror parts take place, due to the constraints of troll existence, at night. there is a lot of shaky cam in the darkness of the forest, which is hard to make fresh and interesting; it's spiced up with night vision and shooting in a cave, which helps, but it's not all that tense. part of it might be that i found the characters thin, interchangeable sketches - "sound girl", "camera person", "guy who got hurt", "muslim chick"; when one died, i wasn't sure how many were left. i was also confused why the guy lied about his faith, putting everyone in danger just to film something he hadn't been interested in and stumbled upon by accident. why did they keep filming? also, why did they just sit on it once they had so much killer footage? some great visuals due to the beauty of local sights (most of it is just "point the camera at this magnificent bit of nature", but there is also a shot with amazing lighting that stayed with me), but mostly loads of darkness, loads and loads of trees.
