chytilová's czech classic didn't work for me, although there's plenty of admirable aspects. it takes an especially creative mind to concoct some of the more remarkable concepts and imagery included in the film. there are plenty of color palettes and unconventional sequences that further improves with the use of sound. this does a lot with helping the viewing experience, although i still do have many many issues with this.
there's plenty of talent on display throughout the film, but i'm forced to disregard it with the pointlessly obnoxious performances from the two leads. they serve no purpose, and contrary to the intent of making the experience more engaging, it does the exact opposite; the film holds a minuscule 76-minute runtime, but feels no less than a sluggish two hours.
the encounters they have with men are repetitive and dull. the conversations they have with each other are hollow and don't include any chemistry in the slightest. there's little to no comedy that works. there's just so many little aspects that snowballed to cause me to have such a joyless watch.
věra chytilová created a completely unique film that managed to find it's crowd, but unfortunately, it was an immense disappointment for me, with irritating leads trumping the inventive imagery.
