Una mezcla de novela picaresca y western que se queda sin la parte burlona de la primera y se queda corta respecto a la segunda.

El precioso y árido paisaje en mitad de la Andalucía de los años 40 (ojo a Luis Tosar poniendo acento andaluz) da lugar a una historia novedosa en el cine español actual, pero que se queda a medias tintas en mucho. El niño protagonista tiene un punto de lázaro pero muchas veces queda como impertinente, mientras que Tosar se dedica a recitar frases filosóficas durante toda la película (posible juego de chupitos). A esto hay que sumarle que la química entre los dos al final del metraje parece demasiado forzada (¿el guión adaptado ha ido demasiado rápido para recoger toda la historia del libro original? Seguramente). Luis Callejo se lleva el mejor papel como capataz , que cumple como puede con el personaje que es lógicamente el malo de la trama pero que no hace nada de propio hasta los últimos 15 minutos.

El contexto de la historia se muestra con el pasado del niño (del cual no sabemos casi nada, lo cual nos hace empatizar aún menos con él) y del pastor (del cual se nos repiten sus dos o tres cruces varias veces; aunque muchas gracias por no meterse más en la Guerra Civil, que cansa un poquito), y con algunas escenas sueltas que no llegan a mucho. De hecho, lo más molesto es posiblemente la cantidad de escenas sin continuación que hay a lo largo del filme(hay una conversación entre dos hombres del capataz que no aporta nada ni tiene continuación después, por ejemplo). Punto aparte merece la música de la película, que empieza y acaba con las preciosas sintonías de los trailers, pero que es simplemente música de acompañamiento el resto del tiempo.

En resumen, una película con una muy buena idea de la cual algo se queda y que se queda a medias (no a medias mal, que quede claro) en la mayoría de apartados, pero con una fotografía remarcable.
