an otherwise effective low-budget 70's horror film is hampered by glaringly bad attempts at humor. based somewhat loosely on a true story, the town that dreaded sundown distinguishes itself via a "true crime" theme complete with a robert stack-style voiceover narration from vern steirman and good acting by ben johnson and andrew prine. some of the kills are effectively staged; you can certainly see the influence this film had on the slasher genre and while liberties are made with the truth there is an effort for some veracity that helps set it apart. unfortunately, those poor attempts at read

not hating but just not my idea of an exciting movie. good old boys procedural murder mystery that's not interested in being an actual mystery and not exactly filled with high concept slasher thrills either. blu-ray transfer looks nice, though. read

hooptober 9 review #8 the tone of this was all over the place. one second you are witnessing a grisly, bloodcurdling murder scene, then some over-the-top comedy routine happens, with police dressed as women being groped by their fellow officers, and that narration as well... this tried too many things at once, but what it did well was passable, and what it did not do so well was rather obvious and out of place and distracting from the rather serious narrative. read

Part slasher part documentary about the Texarkana phantom, with some random slapstick thrown into the mix.
Not the best movie ever, and I can see that some people might call this boring/all over the place with it's weird mixture of genres, but it's a pretty nice watch.
Didn't think I'd ever see someone being stabbed to death with a trombone. read
