horror x52 2021 #1 most popular horror on your watchlist watched on itunes. well, i figured this was going to be fun at least. james wan, leigh whannell, and a decent cast is always going to be decent. with wan and whannell you're probably going to get a strong first act with good world building and a half-assed third act, and this was no exception. it was pretty good for most of the film, and then that third act happened lol. this was probably a fun watch in the cinemas (remember that feeling?). read more

i was pretty impressed with james wan's insidious back in the day- nearly a decade ago now. alas, i was a younger man and less versed in the horror genre. insidious had quickly faded to the back of my mind, buried under a subsequent 9 years of fairly consistent movie watching. after revisiting both conjuring movies, and being very pleased that they are precisely as good (if not a little better) than i remember them, i expected the same from insidious... and didn't really get it. it definitely feels like wan was cutting his teeth on paranormal horror here. the pacing and balance are pretty off... read more

i was a big fan of the original saw and a lot of the gang is back here, but it never really reeled me in. this seems to be an odd hodge podge of imagery and tropes from the supernatural horror films of the 70s and 80s, but it didnt come up with anything original enough to set itself apart for me. plus, i didnt really care enough about the characters before things ratcheted up to 11. the script has a fair number of “okay, lets just make this incredibly obvious so we can move on to the next scary scene” moments, which would probably make for an entertaining date night in the theater, but just... read more

2010s Insidious is directed by James Wan and is the second entry in Blumhouses filmography. And Ill start off by saying this film absolutely rules. Im not the biggest fan of haunting, I like the Exorcist and all that but most of them are very generic unlike Insidious. The cast of this movie is great and it feels refreshing to be able to actually talk about a cast of actors and actresses I actually know again. Rose Byrne gives a great performances and I did actually like the story and its direction. The problems come from its resemblance to far to many 21st century horror films. The jump scares were predictable, therefore ineffective and the music, in a sense, kind of cliché. read more
