how do you portray something no-one ever wants to experience and something that is unimaginable? well this movie did something right. rarely have i had the realisation after 30 minutes of watching that i had been holding my breath the whole time. as a medical student i love the points this movie touches on, the aspects of birth, pregnancy and motherhood that are rarely touched on. the common prejudice against midwifery etc. i just wish the movie was 1) 30 min shorter and 2) less thickly spread with it's analogies and metaphors. i mean seriously, the end? did it really need that? the first 30... read more

what an incredible performance from vanessa kirby. i had only seen her in action vehicles, so i had no idea she was capable of a performance with this much depth and nuance. there are several really intense scenes and they are all really well executed, but a lot of the other moments are less consistent. i don't really understand the motivation to want to punish someone else because of your misfortune, but clearly that desire is out there in the world. shia labeouf's little speech about the tacoma narrows bridge was completely incorrect though. it is frustrating when movies talk about read more
