I'd be lying if I said I did not cry while watching this movie.
I loved it. It felt hauntingly painful. Kudos to the special effects team and sound engineers. read

96 minutes of godzilla being a metaphor for nuclear war except it's explained to the camera every few minutes in case you missed it by some cheesy speech. it had the potential and the tools to be much better but in the end it was just iconic because it wanted desperately to be. read

o que mais me impressionou foi o quanto o contexto político real é alegorizado aqui na ficção. pra época é tecnicamente impressionante, narrativamente mediano e grande como marco no cinema. read

fuuuuck meeee... how did this spawn all those zany sequels i've been watching? especially considering it's all the same director, that's a severe shift in tone. not that i'm complaining, but dang. read

Having seen a lot of monster films these past few weeks (including some of the Universal Classics and the more recent MonsterVerse-films), I find this to be the best of them. The acting is quite uneven, with performances ranging from completely apathetic to overacted nervous breakdowns. But it is honestly refreshing to see a monster film do the things it is meant to do. Not merely reducing the monster to its inherent spectacle (like many American movies tend to do), but by using it as a proxy for different fears and anxieties.
I very much enjoyed the almost cathartic quality the film tries... read

godzilla's godzilla scenes are still pretty gangster, it's everything else that holds this movie back. unfortunately, godzilla is in less than 20% of the film. "what's it all about, alfie?": this film gets a lot more respect in critical circles than the sequels, probably mostly due to the much-discussed nuclear panic angle. in my opinion though, the anti-nukes statement comes mostly in the last third of the film, and in particular in a final (rather hamfisted) speech at the end. i think director ishiro honda was just as interested in making a disaster movie and a romance as he was in any kind... read

65 years ago on this day, this film came out and contributed a great deal to the healing of a scar left on the souls of the people of japan. and while the full extent and significance of that may be impossible to grasp for foreigners like me, it is easy to see the subtext of the atomic bomb and its destructive power. there is a very large focus on the people's reaction and coping with that destruction; nobody was prepared or able to defend themselves. but with all that comes a message of unity, peace, and mending. the people in godzilla overcome the great tragedy and learn to live on, which... read

There's really nothing I can say about Godzilla that everyone reading this doesn't already know: the granddaddy of kaiju (giant monster) films, an explicit commentary on the still-fresh horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the looming specter of still greater horrors in the atomic age, etc. We all know at least the broad parameters of its plot, if not from this movie itself then from one of its countless reiterations, or just from its being such an enduring element of pop culture: atomic testing unearths a prehistoric monster who proceeds to terrorize Japan, and Tokyo in particular.

Godzilla: Poetry After the A-Bomb
By J. Hoberman
ESSAYS
—
JAN 24, 2012
From the scary thuds and mysterious roars that accompany the no-frills titles to the bizarrely poignant final image of the monster, alone at the bottom of the ocean, Ishiro Hondas 1954 Godzilla is all business and pure dream.
Amid a flurry of urgent news-bulletin references to nuclear contamination, fallout, bomb shelters, and the wartime incineration of Nagasaki, a gigantic, hyperdestructive dinosaur lizard rises from the depths of Tokyo Bay. Magnificent and absurd, the humongous radioactive reptile known as... read

Thomas' Super Godzilla Journey #1
O peace, O light, hasten back to us!
Here it is, my favorite film of all time.
The original Godzilla is a classic that will live for the ages and history for its presentation of the titular character and its depictions, themes and message of the atom bombs, radiation and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and its aftermath in the minds, bodies and souls of the Japanese people.
I honestly forgot how beautifully made this film is, from the cinematrography to the writing, from the music to the special effects this film is amazingly done.
However, the read
