It should be illegal to de-makeover somebody. It was like the breakfast club all over again. The gore was okay. Lots of black people there to die. At least one stays dead./ awkwafina/ both of those together feels like a hate crime. read more

My quick rating - 6;5/10. Having grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula's lackey; Renfield finds a new lease on life - and maybe even redemption - when he falls for feisty; perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy. I am so glad they didn't soften this one up to get a PG rating. Chris McKay behind the camera made sure to use the blood in abundance to make sure all the kills were definite. Nicolas Cage playing Dracula was perfectly cast and quite amusing although I did wish he got a bit more screen time. This one just has fun written all over it. Basically an SNL style concept stretched to a 90 minute runtime absolutely drowning in "did that really just happen" snarkiness, but Cage has a fun little outing as Dracula with some good costume and make-up, in fact it's the weird little choices this movie makes that give it what personality it has despite it being a little naff. Reminded me a lot of the Sopranos subplot where Christopher Moltisanti makes a horror movie with mobsters and uses a lot of his experiences with Tony as inspiration. read more

Uneven comedy, I couldn't believe the budget was 65 million but I could believe it made only 23.5 million. The asian lead is very strange looking, I kept thinking she was built like a fire hydrant. I saw she was a rapper with a stupid stage name, thankfully I'm completely unaware of that. Poor Nicholas Cage his 2nd turn as a vampire is another failure. This is just not good. The blood and gore is abundant and always played for laughs but it just didn't work for me.The asian chick's male partner looked like a Hispanic Newman from Seinfeld. read more

A strong cast heads up a modern take on the Dracula mythology and involves the challenges that familiar Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) faces when he begins to rebel against his master's (a delightfully watchable Nicholas Cage) wishes. The reason I was interested in this initially was because of how the film would portray the relationship between Dracula and Renfield as a relationship between a narcissist and a codependent. As for Nicolas Cage; I found his performance to be good. Not worse than usual. He does the job. Nicholas Hoult shines as Renfield tho. Although I just could not get into the Awkafina subplot. I don't find her performance to be engaging enough to an already poor subplot. Also apparently this is a direct sequel to Tod Browning's Dracula from 1931 which I did not know before watching this.
