ever watch a movie that you know nothing about? like nothing at all? martha marcy may marlene [mmmm] was like that for me. i bought it for five bucks maybe a year ago, i spun it on my randomizer (ask below for more details) a few days ago and i watched it last night.
and what a great experience. i loved this film. it was nerve-racking to say the least. it kept my attention right from the beginning and i had no idea how it would all turn out. i didn't know what it was about and every scene, plot point and moment came as a surprise. i will leave it up to you to either watch it like i did or ruin it by reading a synopsis. i will tell you it's a slow burn thriller that lies heavy on the drama side.
when it comes to the technical side of this film it was just fantastic. the sets, the locations, everything looked gorgeous. the cinematography was top notch with muted colours, glorious long takes, swirling camera movements and glorious framing that amounted to the best kind of eye candy.
the acting was phenomenal too. everyone delivers here. john hawkes is fantastic as per usual but elizabeth olsen stands out with her fearless and award worthy performance. how she wasn't nominated i just don't get. she is a revelation here.
for a first time director sean durkin has put together a fantastic debut. it's as if he understands film language intuitively. i wouldn't be surprised if his career peaked with mmmm it is that good but then
i wouldn't be surprised if he made an even better film.either way i am in for whatever he does next.
