One Night in Miami...

i have this ranked on by top 25 of 2020 list and you could argue its inclusion there, if only because it hit most screens in january on prime video. however, it did have a limited theatrical start on christmas day so i decided to count it for 2020. it's certainly tough to argue that regina king's film adaptation of the kemp powers stage play doesn't belong on a best of 2020 list for any other reason. powers adapted his own work for the screen, documenting a fictional meeting of malcolm x, cassius clay, jim brown, and sam cooke in a hotel room after clay beat sonny liston in 1964 and before he... read more

while one night in miami... has a very different feel from the works of august wilson, it is just as impactful of a look into the realities of life for african-americans. the casting is amazing, with two relative unknowns and a couple of actors better known for their supporting roles. they all are fantastic. and though kingsley ben-adir's feels more like an impression of malcolm x at times, it is an excellent impression. eli goree has incredible screen presence and a natural charisma that is an excellent fit for muhammad ali. he could absolutely lead a blockbuster given the opportunity. aldis... read more
