the three musketeers is an absolute disaster from start to finish. paul w.s. anderson is a director who has made a few good-to-watchable films, as well as some bad ones too. this is my least-favorite of his as he takes the alexandre dumas story and decides that swords, swashbuckling, muskets and intrigue aren't exciting enough for today's audience. so instead he adds airships with steampunk-like machine guns and flamethrowers (in the 1700s, no less), slow motion shots and a collection of the most obviously ripped-off sequences seen in a long time. some people questioned why i was downgrading... read more

like ordering the most expensive cocktail from a gaming bar. i always appreciate pwsa's absolute refusal to commit to lore or plot or character development; just absolutely frolicking in failed attempts to wiki-fy these goobers. there's no time for storytelling when everyone has to spend two hours getting into their costume. coming off of my ill-advised resident evil marathon, i did notice a lot more weird gender dynamics and leering camera shots than i expected. it's not overly gross compared to a lot of action movies (and of course mila jovavich gets to have fun doing wacky stunts), but read more

whimsical movie. made me apreciate 17th century aesthetics in set and costume design, i kinda understand the tendency of the academy to award older set and style in art direction. read more
