back in the 90's there was this bizarre direct-to-video animated "film" (i use that term loosely here) called mortal kombat: the adventure begins. it was mostly hand-drawn, but had some scenes with the crudest cg animated you've ever seen in your life. but, it covered the same ground as the movie- in a harmless little 30 minute jaunt. mortal kombat legends: scorpion's revenge feels like that- but if it was longer face-meltingly awesome instead.
i can only assume this is wb trying to drum up interest in the upcoming live action movie, but regardless of their intent- i'm more than happy it exists. it's gleefully violent, at every possible moment- limbs are being ripped off, gore and viscera sprays across the screen, hell- this whole movie is knee-deep in blood and guts. i would say its excessive if it wasn't wholly accurate to the games.
this is probably the most faithful representation of mortal kombat's delightfully grotesque material in any kind of film medium. i adore the first live action movie, but as a pg-13 it was never going to truly feature the ridiculously grisly (and silly) carnage the games were lauded (and criticized) for. scorpion's revenge knows its target audience, and gives them what they've wanted for a long time.
as a fanboy of the franchise, i can't say i'm not a little disappointed that this is scorpion's movie. he is to mortal kombat what wolverine is to x-men. as in, an overused spotlight hog that leans unforgivingly hard on cliche anti-hero tropes. (snore.) there's some really fascinating characters in the game's lore- but it seems we're stuck revisiting the same threadbare chapter in mortal kombat history like a broken fucking record.
i can't stress this enough, i'm tired of scorpion being the face of the mortal kombat franchise. it is nails-on-a-chalkboard annoying. nevertheless, pointless fan gripes aside, for what it is and what it's meant to do- i gotta hand it to them... scorpion's revenge feels like a flawless victory.
