film #8 of hooptober 4.0: revenge of the hoop
fans of existing material -- comics, manga, books and the rest -- often want films to be as faithful to the source as possible. uzumaki is an example of a film that could have stood to be a little less faithful. higuchinsky's take on the junji ito horror manga gets the plot details all right, but loses something by failing to invest the proper sense of dread and tension. working from takao niita's script, higuchinsky creates an experience that is the right level of weird, but the tonal shifts between comedy, drama and horror undercut the film's potential power.
it's not a bad film, to be clear. eriko hatsune is quite good as lead character kirie and the story -- which focuses on a town being plagued by spiral patterns that drive people mad -- hits some notes quite strongly. there is a good amount of imagery that you won't get out of your head after having seen it. but it takes too long to build up and is a bit too idiosyncratic, particularly before the spirals start taking their toll. the final act is wrapped up way too quickly and some of the most potent stuff is just sort of brushed through. there's still some good stuff to enjoy here and it's worth seeing, but uzumaki will be a very mildly entertaining film at best for most.
