an incredibly weak adaptation of the lacklister return to oz, summertime entertainment's legends of oz: dorothy's return is a dull affair that is pretty enough for kids but a chore for anyone hoping for the sort of quality inherant in big-budget animated films these days. the script is given a distinctly child-friendly tone by adam balsam and randi barnes with constant jokes and goofy characterizations, from the heavyset wiser to the cartoonish villain the jester. there's nothing wrong with a kid's film, but this one is distinctly dumbed down and it drastically pales in comparison to its contemporary fellows.
directors will finn and dan st. pierre steer a rudderless ship here. the cgi animation is very good sometimes and awkwardly, drastically off at others, while the voice acting is equally uneven. lea michele, martin short, hugh dancy, oliver platt and the rest try to match the silly tone of the script and it means they don't have much room to breath. legends of oz is pretty damn far from being a legend, that's for sure.
