they threw me for a curve ball with this. i thought it was a pointless prequel as we knew what would happen in the end. not only did they call upon "enemies become best friends" and "rising up against adversity" tropes but we also knew the future of these people. the ending however was sufficiently different to make me smile. i still don't think we really needed a prequel for this but it was nice to visit the monsters world again. read more

In which Pixar embrace how they will never be revolutionary again due to the cultural saturation of their storytelling style, and instead of trying and failing, just decide to make a straight up genre movie, in this case a College comedy. In spite of, or perhaps because of how exploitative it sounds, it's their most creative work in a while. read more

I've got a lot of mixed feelings about this movie. If you were to come up to me and tell me this is one of Pixar's worst movies I wouldn't entirely disagree with you. But despite that, it's definitely one of my favorite Pixar movies or maybe movies period. The movie is pretty meh in a lot of places I dislike a good bit of the Scar Games they do with Oozma Kappa (and I'm not the biggest fan of Oozma Kappa themselves) but I feel like its one of the few Pixar movies that "get me". Mike wants to be a Scarer however he is physically unable to do so. He isn't scary. He tries his very best, he read more
