During the Australian Gold Rush in the late XIX Century, young Afghan cameleer associates with a shady Englishman carrying two stolen gold bars. First-time feature director MacKay also wrote this adventurous odyssey through the wild outback that aims to chronicle the difficult integration of Asian immigrants in the ethnic texture of Australia. While the effects of greed on men have been explored more effectively in the past, "The Furnace" offers a fascinating insight into the multilayered complexity of Australian culture.
